Volunteer FAQ

Q. Where do you meet on work days?

Check our calendar for our current work-day schedule. You can find us around the oval pond or up the steps toward the Cascade and fountain pool.

The address is 3232 Joaquin Miller Road, Oakland. Sign up for newsletters or check the calendar for work day location details.

Q. What is provided on work days?

FOWC has access to tools plus adult & child size gardening gloves from the City of Oakland. The tools will vary depending on the scope of work. We do recommend that you bring your own set(s) of gardening gloves if possible. We will always provide light refreshments and cold water to re-fill those water bottles!

Q. What should I bring to work days?

Bay Area weather is usually mild and sunny year round! Please bring a water bottle, hat, sunscreen and light layers. During winter months, plan to bring warmer layers and boots. We will always cancel or reschedule clean-up days due to inclement weather.

Q. Are kids welcome to come?

YES! Kids of all ages are welcome and we encourage you to bring the whole family! Each clean-up day will include a fun, age appropriate "job" for kids two and older.  If you have little ones under two, there's jobs for you too! We always need help with the refreshment and sign in table.  There's also a playground a few steps away from the oval pond if kids need a play break!

Q. What do you do on work days?

Each work day will vary but here are some things we will focus on: weeding, pruning, planting, stone & stair maintenance, pond clean up, garbage pick up and graffiti clean up if necessary.

Q. Are my volunteer hours logged?

Yes. After each completed clean-up day, FOWC will log the hours of each volunteer through the City of Oakland.
